Every operator sells "the desert safari", but the experiences differ enormously. Here is how to choose.

Evening safari: the default choice

Pickup mid-afternoon, dune bashing at the Al Marmoom or Lahbab dunes, then a camp with a barbecue buffet and live entertainment. Best value and the coolest temperatures.

Morning safari: for thrill-seekers

Shorter and cheaper, with quad biking and sandboarding but no camp dinner. Good if you have a flight later the same day.

Overnight safari

You sleep in a Bedouin-style tent and wake to sunrise over the dunes. The quietest option and the best for photography.

What to bring

  • Loose clothing and a layer — desert nights get cold from November to February.
  • Motion-sickness tablets if dune bashing worries you.
  • Cash for henna and souvenir stalls at the camp.
