The east coast: Gulf of Oman diving, wadis and the oldest mosque in the UAE

Fujairah is the only emirate entirely on the Gulf of Oman, and the difference shows. The water is clearer and cooler, the Hajar Mountains come down close to the shore, and the diving is the best in the country.

Snoopy Island at Al Aqah is the standout snorkelling and dive site — a rock outcrop with reef, turtles and reliable visibility, reachable from the beach. Dibba, further north, is the launch point for dhow trips into Musandam-style fjords.

Inland, Al Bidyah Mosque dates to the fifteenth century and is the oldest known mosque in the UAE, still in use and open to respectful visitors. Wadi Wurayah and the Friday Market road cut into the mountains, and Fujairah Fort anchors a small heritage village.

The drive from Dubai crosses the Hajar range in about 90 minutes and is one of the best road trips in the country.

Best time to visit

October to May for diving visibility and comfortable mountain hiking. Summer is swimmable but hot inland.

Getting there

About 90 minutes from Dubai across the Hajar Mountains via Masafi. Fujairah International (FJR) handles limited flights. A car is the practical way to explore.

Is Fujairah good for diving?
It is the best of the seven emirates for it. Gulf of Oman water is clearer and cooler, with reef, wrecks and reliable turtle sightings around Snoopy Island and Dibba.
Can I snorkel without a boat?
Yes. Snoopy Island is a short swim from the beach at Al Aqah, and equipment rental is available on the shore.
How long is the drive from Dubai?
Roughly 90 minutes to Fujairah city and about the same to Al Aqah, crossing the mountains at Masafi.
Can I visit Al Bidyah Mosque?
Yes, outside prayer times and in modest dress. It is small, still active and free to visit.
