Dubai packs an astonishing amount into a small footprint. In a single day you can stand on an observation deck 555 metres above the Gulf, wander a nineteenth-century wind-tower quarter, and finish the evening on a dune ridge watching the light drain out of the sky. Almost everything is within a 45-minute drive of Downtown.

Most first-time visitors split their time between three zones. Downtown and Business Bay cover the tallest tower, the fountain lake, the largest mall and the Museum of the Future. Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah cover the beaches, waterparks, yacht charters and skydive drop zone. Deira and Bur Dubai cover the older city — the creek, the abra crossings, the gold and spice lanes, and the coral-and-gypsum houses of Al Fahidi.

The desert sits closer than people expect. Conservation-reserve camps in Al Marmoom and Lahbab are 45 to 70 minutes from most hotels, which is why afternoon safaris pick up around 15:00 and still have you back before 22:00. If you want dunes without the drive, morning safaris and quad-bike sessions leave and return before the midday heat.

Practical notes: the Metro Red Line covers the main tourist spine, taxis are metered and cheap by European standards, and ride-hailing works everywhere. Attractions publish timed entry, so booking a slot in advance is usually the difference between walking in and queuing.

Best time to visit

November to March for outdoor comfort (22–30 °C by day). April, May and October are still pleasant before 11:00 and after 17:00. June to September is hot but the cheapest, and indoor attractions run at full capacity.

Getting there

Dubai International (DXB) is 15 minutes from Deira and 25 from Downtown. Al Maktoum (DWC) serves the southern side. The Metro Red Line links the airport, Downtown, Marina and Expo City; taxis and ride-hailing cover everything else.

How many days do I need in Dubai?
Four full days covers the towers, one desert night, a waterpark or theme park day and old Dubai. Five to six lets you add an Abu Dhabi day trip and a beach day without rushing.
Is Dubai walkable?
In pockets. Downtown, Marina, JBR and Al Fahidi are pleasant on foot in winter. Between districts, use the Metro or a taxi — the distances are longer than the map suggests.
What should I wear?
Everyday summer clothing is fine in tourist areas. Cover shoulders and knees in mosques, heritage districts and older souks, and bring modest cover for cultural sites.
Do I need to book attractions in advance?
Yes for the observation decks, theme parks and desert safaris in high season. Advance slots are cheaper and guarantee your preferred time, particularly at sunset.
