Overview

This is the highest tier we sell and the least like a conventional safari. It runs inside a protected desert reserve rather than the open dune belt, which means oryx, gazelle and desert hare instead of convoy traffic. Transport is a restored open-sided Land Rover, the falconry session is private, and dinner is a served fine-dining menu at a candlelit table set on the sand. Guest numbers are strictly limited by the reserve's permit.

Why visit

It is the only package on our list where the desert itself, rather than the entertainment, is the point. Wildlife, dark skies, a serious kitchen and a permit-limited setting.

Know before you go

  • Dune bashing is not permitted inside the reserve — this is a wildlife and dining experience, not a thrill drive. Numbers are capped by the reserve permit, so book at least a week ahead in high season.
  • Loose, light clothing and closed shoes or sandals you do not mind filling with sand. Bring a layer for after sunset — desert temperatures drop quickly once the light goes. Modest dress is appreciated at camps with live performances.
  • Open to all ages. Dune driving is not recommended during pregnancy or for guests with back, neck, heart or spinal conditions. Children under three sit on a parent's lap during the dune drive and travel free.
  • Dune driving is not suitable for wheelchair users, and camp ground is soft sand. Camps have firm matting paths to the main seating and staff can assist with transfers. Tell us about mobility needs at booking and we will place you in a camp with the shortest walk from the vehicle.
  • Wear neutral colours; bright clothing makes wildlife skittish on the approach.
  • Bring binoculars if you have them — the ranger carries a spare pair but only one.
  • Ask the astronomer about Arabic star names; the session is far better as a conversation.
  • Book around the new moon for the darkest sky.

Best time
November to March for wildlife activity and clear skies. Wildlife sightings are best in the last hour before sunset.
Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside 24 hours the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are charged in full. Date changes are free up to 24 hours before travel, subject to availability.
Getting there
Chauffeured saloon from your hotel to the reserve gate, then an open-sided Land Rover inside the reserve. No self-drive access.
Pickup
Private chauffeur collects you from your hotel between 14:30 and 15:30.
