Overview

For drivers who would rather do it than watch it. You take a prepared Land Cruiser or Wrangler with deflated tyres and a two-way radio, and follow a lead instructor in convoy across a graded dune route. Coaching runs over the radio the whole way — throttle control, side-slope technique, reading a crest — and a recovery vehicle follows the group. The session runs about 90 minutes, then the convoy heads to camp for dinner.

Why visit

It is the only package where you actually learn to drive dunes rather than sit in the back. Two hours of coached time on sand is worth more than a dozen passenger safaris.

Know before you go

  • You must hold a valid driving licence issued at least twelve months ago and present it at the briefing. International licences are accepted for visitors. The damage waiver carries an excess that is explained and signed for before you drive. Drivers must be 21 or over.
  • Loose, light clothing and closed shoes or sandals you do not mind filling with sand. Bring a layer for after sunset — desert temperatures drop quickly once the light goes. Modest dress is appreciated at camps with live performances.
  • Open to all ages. Dune driving is not recommended during pregnancy or for guests with back, neck, heart or spinal conditions. Children under three sit on a parent's lap during the dune drive and travel free.
  • Dune driving is not suitable for wheelchair users, and camp ground is soft sand. Camps have firm matting paths to the main seating and staff can assist with transfers. Tell us about mobility needs at booking and we will place you in a camp with the shortest walk from the vehicle.
  • Momentum, not speed, is what gets you up a dune. The briefing repeats this because it is the mistake everyone makes.
  • Never turn across a crest — the instructor will explain why, and it is the one rule that matters.
  • Bring driving gloves if you have them; the wheel gets hot and wet with sweat.
  • Book the early convoy in shoulder season; heat management is easier for the vehicles.
Meeting point
Convoy staging point on the E44 near Lahbab, with a pin and directions sent on your voucher. Transfers can be added at booking.
Opening hours
Friday to Sunday, meet at 14:30. Weekday convoys on request.
Best time
October to April. Summer convoys run in the early morning only, because sand and engine temperatures both climb fast.
Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside 24 hours the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are charged in full. Date changes are free up to 24 hours before travel, subject to availability.
Getting there
Self-drive to the staging point, or add a transfer at booking. Parking for personal vehicles is available at the staging area.
Pickup
Self-drive to the Lahbab staging point, or add a transfer at booking.
