Camel Trekking in the Dubai Desert with Bedouin Guide

Overview

Most safaris offer a five-minute camel loop around a camp. This is the real thing: an hour or more on camelback crossing open dune country with a Bedouin handler who explains the animals, the saddles and the caravan routes that shaped this coast. It is slow, quiet and completely unlike anything else on the desert list.

Why visit

It is the only desert activity where you move at the speed the landscape was designed for, with a guide who works with the animals rather than a camp attendant leading a loop.

Highlights

  • One hour or more of genuine trekking, not a camp loop
  • Bedouin handler with working knowledge of the herd
  • Open dune route away from vehicle tracks
  • Arabic coffee and dates at a shaded rest point
  • Sunset departures available for golden-hour photography

What's included

  • Hotel transfers
  • Camel and handler for the full trek
  • Arabic coffee, dates and water
  • Photo stops

Not included

  • Meals
  • Camp entertainment
  • Gratuities for handlers

Know before you go

  • Camels rise back-legs-first, which pitches you forward sharply. Hold the saddle horn and lean back — the handler will count you through it. Long trousers make the ride much more comfortable.
  • Loose light clothing, closed shoes and sunglasses. Bring a layer for after sunset.
  • Riders aged six and above. Younger children may ride with a parent at the handler's discretion. Maximum rider weight 100 kg.
  • Mounting requires the ability to sit astride and hold on while the camel rises. Not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with back or hip injuries.
  • Wear long trousers; the saddle chafes in shorts within twenty minutes.
  • Take the late-afternoon slot — the light and the temperature are both better.
  • Ask the handler about the camel's name and age; they know every animal individually.
